Peace Like Shock Absorbers

It’s autumn, and I find myself mesmerised by the trees.
All summer they were lush and green so full of life, movement, and promise. But now, as the air turns cool and the days shorten, something sacred begins to happen. Their true colours emerge. The greens give way to golden yellows, fiery reds, deep oranges, and browns, a breathtaking display of beauty before the shedding begins.
It’s as though the trees are whispering, “I must die empty. I will let go.”
There’s a quiet wisdom in their surrender. They seem to know that to receive the new, they must release the old. They don’t resist the process. They don’t cling to what once was. They simply yield to the rhythm of their Creator by letting go leaf by leaf, trusting that new life will come again.
As I watch them, I’m reminded that life often asks the same of us.
To move into a new season, we must be willing to release the last one, the habits that no longer serve us, the pain we’ve carried too long, the memories that keep us stuck. Sometimes, even the things that were once beautiful must fall away so that something deeper can grow.
And yet, the shedding is rarely easy.
It looks messy, the shaking, the heartbreak, the unbearable pain. It feels like the end of me. The moment you whisper, “I’m done. Done. Done.” The kind of breaking that convinces you there’s no coming back from this one.
But here’s the truth I’ve learned: what feels like the end is often the beginning of healing.
It may come disguised as loss, as heartbreak, as death but in God’s eyes, it’s transformation. The breaking is not destruction; it’s divine renewal. It’s the soul’s surrender to God’s pruning, the holy work of clearing space for new life to bloom.
Just as the trees must lose their leaves to prepare for spring, we too must die to what was to make room for what will be. The silence, the stillness, the seeming emptiness, they are not punishments. They are preparations.
So if your life feels bare right now, if everything familiar seems to be falling away, take heart. This is not the end of your story. This is the beginning of your becoming.
God is doing His deepest work in the hidden season. The same hands that allowed the stripping will bring the blooming.
“Behold, I make all things new.” Revelation 21:5 (NKJV)
Reflection
From blooming to shedding, from breaking to healing, from dying to arising, every part of the process is holy.
What might God be asking you to release in this season?
Are you holding onto something He’s asking you to lay down?
Sometimes, healing begins the moment we stop fighting the fall and trust that even in our shedding, we are still held.
